Lesson Sequence

Lesson ONE
Lesson TWO
Lesson THREE

Students are extending on their existing knowledge of Base10 structure and explore binary digits.

Students will watch an informative video helping them understand how

computers and digital systems use binary to represent all types of data.

Work through the Introduction to Binary system (linked in Resources) as a class.

Students will then complete a the Finger activity (linked) found on the webpage to reinforce acquired knowledge using their own body to learn how to write in binary numbers.

Lesson Two allows the students to further develop their knowledge as they work on "More on Binary number"  where binary digits are used will be reinforced. Extension activities allow students to practise their binary digits through the use of an online CISCO Binary Game and Binary Puzzle.

Lesson FOUR

Following on from Lesson Two, students will learn how to use the ASCII computer code. They will then use this code to write their names in binary form. They will then create a single word to code and decode them as a class.  An extension activity for the students provides an introduction to SCRATCH, a programming platform to which they may wish to use to complete their assessment task.

Assessment Task

Students will code a secret message into a presentation platform of their choice such as PowerPoint or a Scratch story. In this presentation they will define binary systems and provide an explanation for their audience of how to 'crack' their code.

In Lesson Four, students will explore the site SCRATCH. This lesson will build skills in programming which the students may choose to create a story for their assessment piece. Conduct tutorial as a class to learn together and then let the students explore.
